Unfortunately, it is often the things we grab that are plied high with sugar and salt, mass produced, the packaging says “Eat Me”, and that’s just what we do…and what I used to do. Sometimes, I’d say to myself I will make a better choice tomorrow,……but kicking that habit can be hard.

Actually, I’ve always loved breakfast but just got out of the routine. However every now & then, I’d make my own muesli at home for the family & always found it to be better than anything I could buy in the supermarkets, so when I was made redundant from my job in Central London, Simply SeedZ breakfast products was born! Oats – are they gluten free?

gluten-free-oatsI am often asked if my porridge is gluten free, and following research with my supplier, I hope the following information is of help and interest to those who may suffer from Coeliac disease or choose a gluten free as a lifestyle choice.

The oats used in my porridge is supplied by Mornflake of Crewe who process oats that are grown throughout the UK.
Oats can become contaminated by gluten from wheat & barley either through crop rotation or in the processing, For a product to be classified as gluten free, the product must have less than 20ppm gluten.

While Mornflake use the best equipment for removing any wheat or barley seeds in their processing and in testing, they regularly fall below the 20ppm gluten criteria. However, it is not possible to guarantee that all their oats processed can be labelled as gluten free, because of the associated risks in growing conditions.

As quoted on the Mornflake website,
“Mornflake have therefore made the decision to regrettably withdraw our products from the Coeliac Directory, and all new packaging includes the statement “Contains Gluten”. This is despite the fact that our oats are often less than 20ppm gluten, the oats are grown in exactly the same way as they always have been, and our milling processes have not changed.”

Interestingly on the Mornflake website it also states “One other point to note is that if we were to sell our oats made up into porridge using the instructions on the packets then the product would be allowed to be sold as “Gluten Free”.

Confusing I know, but all I can do is offer as much information as I glean to assist in your decision – are oats gluten free?? They may well be…

Simple to make Bircher Muesli for Breakfast

My very popular Bircher Muesli recipe is just so easy to prepare for your breakfast tomorrow morning, with no cooking required!

Ingredients (to make 2 x 75g portions)

150g SeedZ Bircher Muesli Mix (Apricot & Cranberry or Banana & Blueberry)

150ml of apple juice or orange juice

1 tbsp low fat Greek yoghurt

Put all ingredients in bowl and mix thoroughly.

Cover and chill – for best results minimum 2 hours or preferably overnight.

To serve, grate some apple or slice some banana

If you want a slightly softer consistency, add a little more juice.

Once made your Bircher Muesli will keep for up to 5 days in fridge, if you can resist it for that long 🙂

Olympic flag is handed to Rio!

What an amazing and spectacular Olympics we have just witnessed!

From the Opening to Closing Ceremonies, and all the athletic action in the 16 days in between, has given our whole nation something to be proud of, including 65 medals!!

To think that it only 16 years ago we managed to gain just one medal, so it is incredible just how far our athletes have progressed since 1996.

Everyone in Team GB is a champion, and that includes their entire support network of coaches, trainers, not forgetting their families and friends who give the encouragement and belief to our athletes to succeed.

It’s going to feel a little strange now that London 2012 is over. I do hope that the all athletes and the fantastic Games Makers take a well deserved break, and look back with fond memories on two very special weeks of their lives.

I’m going to miss the excitement the Games brought – I want every day to be Super Saturday 

And now we look forward to the Paralympics, which I am sure will be just as incredible.

Must try and get some tickets….


Simple Desert with Greek Yoghurt, Raspberrys and Crunchy Muesli

A simple & easy desert that is not only quick to make, it tastes & looks great and is one of your five a day!

Ingredients (per person)

2 tbsp Rachels Coconut Greek Yoghurt

Fresh Raspberries

1 tsbp Crunchy ‘Munchy’Muesli – Blueberry & Apricot from SeedZ

Put two tablespoons of yoghurt in wine glass, add one table spoon of Crunchy Muesli,  decorate with handful of fresh raspberries!  Now how easy is that??  It not only looks good, but is really scrummy!!

Other yoghurts and fresh fruit work just as well 🙂

Easy Summer Salad with Gorgonzola Cheese & SeedZ Recipe

Easy Summer Salad with Gorgonzola & SeedZ

This salad is a perfect accompaniment to any BBQ meat or fish and is one of your 5 a day!

Ingredients: 3-4 good handfuls of Mixed salad leaves (eg rocket, spinach, watercress, lollo rosso)

1 tbsp British Golden Rapeseed Oil

200g Gorgonzola cheese, cut into 1/2inch chunks

1 x packet of Worcester Sauce SeedZ

Put salad leaves into big serving bowl, add chunks of Gorgonzola and toss. Drizzle over rapeseed oil, add SeedZ and serve!

Other cheeses work well, especially parmesan broken into chunks too!
