24-30 Jan – Its National Breakfast Week!

cropped-All-Pots.jpg

It can sometimes be difficult to find time for breakfast especially if you have a long commute to work each day.

You’re in a packed train carriage, followed by long days in the office at everyone’s beck & call. It’s so much easier & quicker to just pick up something on the go from the passing bakery that probably isn’t the best/healthiest choice to accompany that large cappuccino….

So you quickly grab whatever you find, & its gone in seconds…..you probably didn’t notice or even taste whatever it was and by midday you are absolutely starving….quick run to the vending machine or corner café & grab something…again….not noticing what you’ve eaten, you’ve too much to do – you’ve emails/meetings/clients to see….and so each day/week goes by the same, still no time for breakfast….

Unfortunately, it is often the things we grab that are plied high with sugar and salt, mass produced, the packaging says “Eat Me”, and that’s just what we do…and what I used to do. Sometimes, I’d say to myself I will make a better choice tomorrow,……but kicking that habit can be hard.

Actually, I’ve always loved breakfast but just got out of the routine. However every now & then, I’d make my own muesli at home for the family & always found it to be better than anything I could buy in the supermarkets, so when I was made redundant from my job in Central London, Simply SeedZ breakfast products was born! A delicious and nutritious range with no added sugar or salt, that also contain pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Typical sugar content (from the fruit) per portion is less than one teaspoon!

So now you can enjoy a quick breakfast that is going to keep you going through the day and available to buy online and independent farm shops and delis, and as its national Breakfast Week, with all online orders this week, you will receive a free Breakfast recipe booklet.

Give us a try, our quick porridge pots are perfect for your daily commute!

Happy Breakfast Week!

Oats – are they gluten free?

gluten-free-oatsI am often asked if my porridge is gluten free, and following research with my supplier, I hope the following information is of help and interest to those who may suffer from Coeliac disease or choose a gluten free as a lifestyle choice.

The oats used in my porridge is supplied by Mornflake of Crewe who process oats that are grown throughout the UK.
Oats can become contaminated by gluten from wheat & barley either through crop rotation or in the processing, For a product to be classified as gluten free, the product must have less than 20ppm gluten.

While Mornflake use the best equipment for removing any wheat or barley seeds in their processing and in testing, they regularly fall below the 20ppm gluten criteria. However, it is not possible to guarantee that all their oats processed can be labelled as gluten free, because of the associated risks in growing conditions.

As quoted on the Mornflake website,
“Mornflake have therefore made the decision to regrettably withdraw our products from the Coeliac Directory, and all new packaging includes the statement “Contains Gluten”. This is despite the fact that our oats are often less than 20ppm gluten, the oats are grown in exactly the same way as they always have been, and our milling processes have not changed.”

Interestingly on the Mornflake website it also states “One other point to note is that if we were to sell our oats made up into porridge using the instructions on the packets then the product would be allowed to be sold as “Gluten Free”.

Confusing I know, but all I can do is offer as much information as I glean to assist in your decision – are oats gluten free?? They may well be…

Are vitamins necessary?

Well in a word, yes they are!!

But taking supplements can be a chore.  How many times I’ve bought a containers of recommended vitamins with good intention to start a regime of taking each day.  They tend to be expensive, easy to forget to take and sit in a cupboard until the sell by date….then bin!

But there is an easier way to get all the vitamins we need to maintain and improve our health and well being, through diet.

A balanced diet is essential we are told.  Let me tell you just some of the key vitamins we need and why.

Vitamin C – Found in Cranberries – Cranberries offer excellent anti inflammatory benefits, antioxidant, cardiovascular benefits, anti cancer benefits and digestive tract benefits

Vitamin A – Found in Apricots – Apricots contain nutrients that promote good vision, anti oxidant. apricots are also a good source of fibre, preventing constipation & digestive conditions

Vitamin K – Found in Pumpkin Seeds & Cinnamon – Pumpkin seeds are also a great source of protein, iron & copper, low in cholesterol and sodium.

Vitamin E – Found in sunflower seeds – Sunflower seeds are also low in cholesterol and sodium
